Berlin

Hard, clean, mineral. The Brandenburg plain in a glass.

100% groundwater from nine waterworks across the city. Natural bank filtration from lakes and rivers (Spree, Havel, Tegeler See) recharges the aquifer, which Berliner Wasserbetriebe extracts and treats.. Berlin sits on a sandy glacial outwash plain from the Weichsel Ice Age (12,000 years ago). The aquifer is Pleistocene sand and gravel beneath the city. Bank filtration through lakeside sand provides natural pre-filtration. Medium-hard water with elevated nitrate from agricultural legacy.

Taste Profile

Hard, clean, mineral. The Brandenburg plain in a glass.

Berlin water has the honest, direct quality of its city — moderate hardness (14.8°dH), clean from groundwater treatment, slightly alkaline with a bicarbonate backbone that gives body without the overwhelming chalk of London or Paris. The elevated silica (14.2 mg/L, highest of any VATTEN city) contributes a faint dry minerality — like licking a clean stone — that makes it distinctive among northern European capitals. No chlorine aftertaste: Berliner Wasserbetriebe uses UV and minimal chlorination. The water makes good bread. Berlin knows this. Its bakers have been arguing about it for centuries.

Water Memory

Berlin's water survived two regimes and a wall.

Berlin was divided for 28 years. The water system was not. East and West Berlin maintained separate water infrastructure from 1961 to 1989, with the DDR controlling the Friedrichshagen waterworks in the east and West Berlin developing the Tegel and Spandau works. When the wall fell, reunification of the water network took longer than the political reunification — the pipes and treatment philosophies were incompatible. By 1995, Berliner Wasserbetriebe was operating a unified network for the first time in a generation. The water now flowing from a Prenzlauer Berg tap passes through infrastructure built under the Kaiser, rebuilt under Hitler, maintained under Honecker, and unified under Helmut Kohl. It is hard. It carries a lot.

Das Berliner Wasser ist so hart wie die Stadt selbst.

Berlin water is as hard as the city itself.

Geological memory

Berlin sits on glacial outwash — sand and gravel deposited by meltwater from the Weichsel glacier 12,000 years ago. The aquifer is shallow, only 15–30 metres down, and easily recharged by local lakes and rivers via bank filtration. This makes Berlin's water supply highly responsive to surface quality — and vulnerable to what flows into the Spree.

Political memory

In 2013, Berlin completed the removal of all public lead water mains — ahead of most European capitals. In 2024, Germany partially legalised cannabis. EMCDDA wastewater data from Berlin immediately showed a measurable increase in THC metabolites. The Spree records the law changing.

Cultural memory

Berghain, the world's most famous nightclub, occupies a former East German power plant a few hundred metres from the Spree. The water that flows into the club's toilets on a Sunday morning carries a chemical summary of Saturday night that is, by European standards, exceptionally specific. EMCDDA data for Berlin contains stories that no newspaper could print.

Water Politics

B

Overall

Transparency — public data access7/10
Infrastructure — pipe & treatment quality7/10
Source protection — watershed defence6/10

Berlin's water system is well-managed, transparent, and technically sound. Nitrate contamination from agricultural legacy is the primary unresolved issue; PFAS monitoring is improving. The city publishes detailed quality data and has completed lead pipe removal from the public network.

Failures

  • ×Nitrate trending upward over 30 years — agricultural land use around Berlin driving aquifer contamination
  • ×PFAS from legacy industrial sites south of the city — monitoring ongoing
  • ×Privatisation episode (1999–2013) led to deferred infrastructure investment; re-municipalised after referendum
  • ×Pre-1973 Altbau apartment buildings may retain internal lead plumbing

Achievements

  • 100% groundwater supply — natural bank filtration provides pre-treatment
  • Lead mains removed from public network by 2013
  • Re-municipalised after 2013 referendum — public interest restored
  • Detailed online water quality reports by postcode
  • Nitrate blending strategy keeps distribution within limits despite rising aquifer levels

What Berlin must do

Set binding nitrate reduction targets for Mark Brandenburg agriculture. Fund advanced PFAS treatment at affected waterworks. Mandate lead plumbing survey in pre-1973 buildings and provide subsidised replacement.
