Why we measure drugs
Since 2010, researchers at Stockholm University have monitored illicit drug use via wastewater analysis. Trace metabolites enter the water cycle through human excretion, survive partial treatment, and re-enter supply. Concentrations are measured in nanograms per litre — millions of times below any pharmacological effect. We publish them because they exist, and because the only dishonest thing would be to hide them.

Stockholm tap water vs. bottled water
Stockholm tap water scores better than most European bottled water on heavy metals, nitrates, and microbiology. Bottled water is tested quarterly — tap water is tested daily. The only things you find in Stockholm tap water that you don't find in many premium brands are the compounds we bother to test for.
EU Drinking Water Directive 2020/2184
The new EU directive, fully transposed in Sweden from 2023, added PFAS, reduced lead limits from 10 to 5 μg/L, and introduced bisphenol A testing. Stockholm meets or exceeds all new parameters.
