Overview

MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) is a synthetic empathogen predominantly used recreationally. EMCDDA WBE data show highest MDMA concentrations in the Netherlands and Belgium (production clusters) and major night-economy cities.

Health Relevance

At environmental concentrations, no pharmacological effect on humans. MDMA is a neurotoxin at high doses, selectively damaging serotonergic neurons — irrelevant at trace water concentrations.

Controversy & Contested Science

EMCDDA estimates 200+ tonnes of MDMA are produced annually in Europe, primarily for export. Production uses safrole (from Southeast Asian plants) and PMK-glycidate. The environmental damage from MDMA production waste — routinely dumped in Dutch rural areas, contaminating soil and groundwater — has become a major Dutch environmental enforcement crisis, costing hundreds of millions in remediation and driving significant diplomatic pressure on precursor chemical exporting nations.
