Taste Profile
Clean. Quietly mineral. The granite archipelago in a glass.
Stockholm water is soft — born from melt water filtered for 10,000 years through Baltic granite. Low calcium and magnesium mean minimal interference with natural flavour. A light bicarbonate structure gives gentle support without weight. No chlorine aftertaste: Stockholm uses UV and ozone, not chloramine. The result is one of the cleanest-tasting tap waters in the world — neutral enough to reveal rather than compete.

Water Memory
Mälaren remembers everything.
Stockholm was built on the water. Birger jarl chose this island in 1252 precisely because Mälaren — the lake that feeds the city — was fresh, vast, and connected to the sea. For 773 years, every Stockholm resident has drawn from the same source. The water that runs from your tap passed through the bodies of Vikings, through the cholera epidemics of the 1850s that finally forced the city to build proper infrastructure, through the industrial century, through the long Swedish project of becoming the cleanest nation on earth. It carries trace compounds from ten million pharmaceutical prescriptions and an unknowable number of weekend drug habits. It still passes every regulatory test by an order of magnitude.
“Vatten är liv. Och Stockholm har mer liv i sitt vatten än det tror.”
Water is life. And Stockholm has more life in its water than it knows.
Geological memory
Baltic granite. The bedrock is 1.8 billion years old — among the oldest exposed rock on earth. Water moves slowly through it, emerging soft, with low mineral content. The stone remembers the Precambrian.
Political memory
Stockholm Vatten publishes daily test results. Sweden mandates real-time water quality data under Chapter 6 of the Environmental Code. Every compound we detect is a compound they also detected and published. This is the difference between a city that trusts its citizens and one that does not.
Cultural memory
The archipelago defines Stockholm. Every café serves tap water without asking. The city's relationship to water is unselfconscious — it is simply good. We are putting that in a bottle partly to make visible what has been invisible: this water is remarkable, and someone made it that way.
Water Politics
Overall
Stockholm is among the world's most transparent cities about water quality. Real-time public data, proactive testing, and sustained infrastructure investment.
Failures
- ×Microplastic standards not yet defined — city tests but has no legal threshold to enforce
- ×PFAS from legacy industrial sites in the Mälaren watershed remains unresolved
- ×Distribution infrastructure in older suburbs lags city centre quality
Achievements
- ✓Daily public reporting of 200+ parameters via Stockholm Vatten
- ✓UV + ozone treatment replacing chlorine — no chloramine taste
- ✓Mälaren catchment area legally protected since 1986
- ✓Norsborg plant certified to ISO 22000 food safety standard
What Stockholm must do
Define and enforce microplastic limits. Fund complete replacement of PFAS-affected aquifer remediation in Mälaren tributaries.
